Maharashtra Police Forms SIT To Reinvestigate Alleged 2007 Custodial Death Of Pardhi Activist Suman Kale

August 14, 2026 - Maharashtra Police has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to reexamine the case of Pardhi activist Suman Kale's alleged custodial death from two decades ago, following a directive from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The SIT, headed by Sudhir Hiremath and under the supervision of Pravin Salunke, will investigate the criminal case under various IPC provisions and address all applications, complaints and matters related to Kale's death within three months. The team's findings will be submitted to the relevant authorities.

Kale, a member of the Pardhi community, was reportedly arrested by the Shrirampur police in May 2007 in connection with a gold robbery. Her brother, Girish Chavan, has led the family's pursuit of justice for nearly two decades, disputing the initial police claim that Kale died by suicide. The family alleges that she was unlawfully detained between May 12 and May 14, 2007, and subjected to severe physical and mental torture.

They also claim that medical records were forged to shield the accused police officers and the treating doctor.

The SIT's formation follows a prolonged campaign by Kale's family and activists demanding a fresh investigation and accountability for those responsible. A delegation led by Padma Shri awardee Girish Prabhune, who advocates for the Pardhi community, met with Fadnavis along with family members and activists, emphasizing the need for an independent probe and stringent action.

Chief Minister Fadnavis directed the use of stringent provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the accused police personnel.
