Maanzo: Ruto is looking for Kalonzo to give him a better image

Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo has cautioned opposition politicians against joining President William Ruto's administration as they prepare for the 2027 general election. In a radio interview, Maanzo warned that such a move could be perilous. He stated that the ongoing political realignments could reshape the opposition and the upcoming contest significantly.

Maanzo specifically mentioned that President Ruto is seeking prominent opposition figures like Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to enhance the image of his administration.

According to Maanzo, Ruto is targeting prominent opposition figures to clean up his image, both locally and internationally. Kalonzo Musyoka, as the leader of the Wiper party, commands a reliable voting bloc and a significant number of Members of Parliament, making him an essential figure in the political realignments. Maanzo dismissed speculation about Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna joining Ruto, stating that Sifuna would face resistance from his supporters and remains in the ODM party.

Maanzo also highlighted recent remarks attributed to Kisii Governor Simba Arati, suggesting growing competition over the opposition's political direction and potential coalition arrangements. Arati reportedly told Ruto that there would be no discussions without resolving the issue of the deputy presidency. Maanzo argued that these emerging political calculations could have implications for various regions, including Mt Kenya East, as parties and politicians position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
