Luigi Mangione pleads guilty in CEO killing

On November 24, 2024, a man believed to be Luigi Mangione arrived in New York City on a Greyhound bus, presenting a fake New Jersey driver's license under the name Mark Rosario. He took a taxi to the area of the New York Hilton Midtown, where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was later shot. Thompson arrived in the city on the same day and stayed at a hotel across the street from the Hilton.

On December 4, Thompson was shot and killed outside a hotel as he walked to UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference. The shooter, Mangione, waited in the area for about an hour before ambushing Thompson, then fled through Central Park, took the subway to Penn Station, and boarded an Amtrak train to Philadelphia. Surveillance video captured the shooting.

In the days following the shooting, police released various images of the suspected shooter, including one showing his face as he checked into the hostel. They also found a backpack containing Monopoly money and a black Tommy Hilfiger jacket in Central Park. The backpack was later recovered and was found to contain a 3D-printed pistol that prosecutors said matched the one used to kill Thompson, as well as a notebook expressing the desire to "wack" a health insurance executive.

Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after providing a fake ID and identifying himself as Luigi Mangione. Police found a 3D-printed pistol and a notebook in his backpack that detailed his intention to "wack" a health insurance executive.
