OpenAI, the leading US artificial intelligence company, is expanding its presence in Germany. As OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman disclosed in an interview with the "Handelsblatt", the company plans to open a second German office in Berlin. Currently, OpenAI has only one office in Germany, located in Munich. Altman also expressed interest in building their own data centers in Germany to ensure the growing demand for AI infrastructure.

Germany is among the world's most important markets for OpenAI, with the country being the largest ChatGPT market in Europe and ranking among the top 3 globally in terms of paying subscribers. Altman stated that Germany has always been one of their largest and fastest-growing markets. The German economy heavily relies on artificial intelligence and is a central partner, as demonstrated by their collaboration with Deutsche Telekom.

Although the exact opening date for the new Berlin office has not been set, it is expected to happen "quite soon". OpenAI is also exploring options for local infrastructure, driven by the rapidly increasing need for computational power required to run and train modern AI models. During a discussion with government representatives in Berlin, Altman mentioned that they had already had talks about a potential data center in Germany, but these discussions did not yield concrete results at this point.

Altman emphasized that each country must decide whether to build data centers within their borders or rent access to data centers in other countries. He personally hopes that Germany will lead the way in building data centers and provide the necessary framework and resources. Regardless of this, Germany is already benefiting from the deep integration of modern AI applications.

Altman addressed concerns from businesses about the potential leakage of confidential operational data and know-how, assuring that OpenAI has no intention of using company inputs to train future AI models. Instead, they offer a binding zero data storage policy, ensuring that transmitted data will not be stored for future analysis.

Altman firmly believes in protecting the privacy of corporate customers, aiming to support the entire economy rather than competing with their own clients.
