Kagombe removes Ruto’s official portrait from his office after defecting from UDA

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Gabriel Kagombe has removed President William Ruto’s official portrait from his office following his defection from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to the opposition. At a press conference on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Kagombe accused Ruto of betraying the mountain region and failing to fulfill his promises to Gatundu South constituents.

He claimed that Ruto's meeting in Naivasha marked the demise of the UDA and predicted that more Mount Kenya MPs would follow suit and join the Wamunyinyi movement. Kagombe also criticized Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, suggesting that he too might be dumped soon due to his lack of support for the president. He revealed that Kisii Governor Simba Arati demanded the deputy president slot and a 50% share of government during the Naivasha meeting, which the president allegedly supported, leading to the MPs storming out in protest.

Kagombe softened his stance on DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, acknowledging him as the kingpin of the mountain and stating that this is the new reality. This move comes as many politicians defect from UDA and align with the opposition, particularly after the Ol Kalou by-election where Gachagua's DCP party won with a substantial margin.
