Judoka Menaga overcomes grief to win Sukma gold

Shah Alam witnessed a remarkable transformation as M. Menaga Dewi claimed the women's under-48 kilogramme judo title at the Malaysia Games (Sukma). The 19-year-old judoka from Kedah had not initially anticipated victory, citing struggles with her confidence prior to the competition. However, her determination to dedicate her efforts to her late grandmother, who passed away approximately two weeks prior, proved to be the driving force behind her triumph.

Menaga Dewi, who had previously placed second at the 2024 Games, entered the final with a singular focus. "I did not expect to get the gold because I was not focused and I was not confident in myself," she admitted. "Before I went in, I just wanted to dedicate the gold to my grandmother. I hope she is happy with me."

The gold medal was secured with a narrow 1-0 win over fellow national team member Lucus Chong Wen Le. The match was tense, but Menaga Dewi's resolve was bolstered by her grandmother's unwavering support. Her grandmother's tough love played a significant role in Menaga Dewi's development, particularly after losses. Her grandmother would challenge her, asking why she lost when she could have won.

Through Kalairani Bapmaruthai, her aunt and guardian, Menaga Dewi has received unwavering support since the age of 10. Kalairani was present in Shah Alam to witness her niece's success, having followed Menaga Dewi's progress since she was a young athlete.
