I’ve been living with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 for 3 weeks — and I was wrong

After three weeks of experiencing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, my perspective on the device has evolved, revealing both positive and negative aspects. Initially, I was disappointed that the phone lacked a telephoto zoom lens, considering the $1,900 price tag. However, after rigorous testing, I found the dual rear cameras sufficient for most needs, especially with the improved low-light performance compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The 7.6-inch OLED main display and 5.5-inch cover screen offer a seamless user experience, allowing for versatile usage like video calls or watching content using the outer display in tent mode. While some apps lack optimization for the wider display, Samsung's commitment to enhancing app experiences on foldable devices is evident.

A notable convenience is the ability to use the phone as a mini laptop, albeit with limited functionality for tasks like playing videos or answering calls. This feature may not be a dealbreaker for everyone, as the device offers a hands-free alternative through the outer display.

The design of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is striking, with a wide, sleek profile that has become more comfortable over time. However, it may be less convenient to carry in a front pocket due to its width. Despite this, the device has become my preferred e-reader, offering an immersive reading experience.

One drawback is the loss of TikTok's ability to automatically refresh comments, which can be frustrating when scrolling through multiple videos. This issue, coupled with the need to exit comments to scroll, highlights the importance of app optimization on such devices. Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 proves to be a capable foldable phone, with trade-in deals available to make it more accessible.
