Iran war: Trump dismisses concerns over conditions on USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier

President Donald Trump dismissed concerns on Friday over the living conditions and mental health of service members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, which is deployed to confront Iran. Asked if family members were worried, Trump assured they were not. He also rejected the notion that the ship, now at sea for nine months, had been sent on an excessive duration mission, stating it was "not nearly enough".

Trump confirmed reports that the Lincoln would soon be replaced by another aircraft carrier as the US continues its standoff with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz and the nation's nuclear activities.

Reports from US media and military publications have highlighted deteriorating living conditions on the Lincoln, with multiple crew members relatives reporting suicide attempts. This has led Democratic lawmakers to call for investigations into the situation. Jonathan Schroden, chief research officer at the Center for Naval Analyses, stated that carrier strike groups typically operate for six-month deployments, partly due to sailor welfare concerns.

The controversy surrounding the families' complaints poses a challenge for Trump, who previously pledged to avoid prolonged "forever wars" in the Middle East. Media coverage of the families' concerns adds an uncomfortable new dimension to Trump's attempt to sell the unpopular war. A sailor who jumped into the sea on August 3 was recovered, while another sailor attempted the same act.

The US military claims no increase in suicidal ideations or attempts on the ship, citing available resources such as chaplains, psychologists, social workers, a prevention coordinator, and a dog named CAPT Fathom to support crew morale. Suicide helplines in Hong Kong and the US were provided for further assistance.
