Iran formalises Strait of Hormuz control as US struggles to sustain war it launched with Israel

Iran solidifies control over the Strait of Hormuz as the United States grapples with sustaining the war it initiated in conjunction with Israel. In response to threats of unprecedented economic isolation, Washington remains unable to disrupt Iran's stronghold on the strategically vital waterway. An Iranian parliamentary committee has endorsed the guidelines for a strategic blueprint regulating security and advancement in the strait and the Persian Gulf.

Valiullah Bayati, a spokesperson for the parliamentary internal affairs and councils committee, announced on Friday that the proposals will proceed to further examination. The plan aims to obstruct ships and equipment from hostile nations, including the US and Israel, from traversing the waterway, citing their "hostile actions against our country and unjust, aggressive acts against the Iranian people."

Washington vowed further punitive measures, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent predicting "economic isolation the world has never seen before" and a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz to impede the flow of goods in and out of Iranian ports. Iran, meanwhile, pursues alternatives to US-controlled financial institutions, with the Central Bank governor expressing intentions to join the Brics-backed New Development Bank.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy asserts control over the strait, stating that "the Strait of Hormuz is closed. Our control over movements is complete and decisive," while shipping data confirms the restriction, with Kpler recording only nine vessels passing through on Thursday, below the usual August average of 12. The situation highlights the complexities of Iran's assertion of control and the difficulties faced by the United States in achieving its objectives in the region.
