Apple has been sending these notifications since 2021, but previously provided fewer details on how to respond. The company advises users to keep software updated, use two-factor authentication, and enable the stolen device protection feature to minimize the risk. If a user receives such a notification, they are encouraged to seek expert help, such as the Digital Security Helpline from the non-profit Access Now.

Mercenary spyware attacks are described as well-funded, often linked to state actors or private companies like Pegasus from the NSO Group, which create spyware tools for such purposes. Apple has notified users in over 150 countries about these threats, targeting individuals like journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats.

Experts note that while Apple users often perceive their devices as less vulnerable, recent surveys suggest otherwise, with a noticeable gap in cybersecurity software usage compared to Windows users.
