Hopes fade in Colombia as window to find quake survivors shuts

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia caused widespread devastation, leaving 377 people missing, with at least 273 confirmed dead and over 3,800 injured. The strongest quake to hit the country this century destroyed nearly 13,000 homes in the western cities of Cali and Pereira, as well as across the coffee region and along the coast.

Maria Rodriguez, a 72-year-old woman, lost her apartment after years of saving for it. She and her husband now reside on a soccer pitch, unsure of their future aid and possible relocation. Rescue efforts continued after the 72-hour critical window for finding survivors, but the chances of finding anyone alive became increasingly slim.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella declared the disaster an economic emergency and announced three days of national mourning. International urban search-and-rescue teams are expected to arrive soon, though Mexico refused entry to Mexican rescuers due to certification issues. The Colombian government is working on a census of damaged and destroyed homes to determine which could still be occupied.
