Gowa DPRD moves to impeach regent over alleged graft, extramarital affair

On May 25, the Gowa DPRD reached a consensus to establish a special inquiry committee to examine three primary allegations against Regent Sitti Husniah Talerang. These allegations include suspected corruption, an alleged extramarital affair, and alleged abuse of authority. The Gowa Legislative Council has moved forward to propose Husniah's impeachment to the Supreme Court due to these alleged misconducts.

The decision to move forward with the impeachment proposal was unanimous, with all seven factions of the Gowa DPRD, including Husniah's own National Mandate Party (PAN), supporting the initiative during a plenary hearing on Wednesday. The investigation into Husniah's alleged misconduct has been ongoing for months, according to Gowa DPRD secretary Andi Idil Hafid.

Hafid emphasized that the alleged misconduct had damaged the integrity of the regent's office, undermined local governance, and eroded public trust, justifying the proposal to impeach Husniah. Dian Purnamasari, a member of the Gerindra faction and a DPRD representative, confirmed that all 45 councilors agreed to sign the impeachment proposal for Husniah, as reported by CNN Indonesia.

Should the Supreme Court deem the proposal legally sound, the home minister would then have the authority to remove Husniah from her position. The impeachment motion against Husniah has gained significant traction since early May, as shared by multiple sources.
