Ghana police foil bank robbery, kill two suspects, arrest one

The Ghana Police Service thwarted a robbery attempt at three banks in Labone, Accra, resulting in the arrest of one suspect and the deaths of two others. Intelligence received on August 13, 2026, at 10:45 am alerted the police to a gang's plans to assault GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in the Labone area. Upon discovering the suspects in their vehicles parked near the banks, the police pursued one of the vehicles, which attempted to flee.

The suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, was apprehended while the other occupant managed to escape. A pursuit ensued with the second vehicle, leading to the death of two suspects in a shoot-out. Police recovered two vehicles - a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson - along with a blow pistol. Maazi is currently in police custody, providing assistance with the investigation.

The morgue has received the bodies of the deceased suspects for identification, preservation, and autopsy. The Ghana Police Service praised the swift response team for successfully preventing the robbery and encouraged the public to report any suspicious criminal activities.
