Durban's water crisis: Residents face daily struggles amid failing infrastructure

Residents in Durban are facing daily challenges due to a water crisis caused by failing infrastructure. The eThekwini Municipality is struggling to provide reliable water supply to areas such as Bluff, Merebank, Montclair, Cato Manor, Clairwood, Umbilo, Bellair, Bayhead, Yellowwood Park, and surrounding regions. On Sunday, the water supply to the south of Durban was finally restored after six days without water, following the repair of a burst pipe at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works.

Residents reported health issues and difficulties in maintaining hygiene during the water outage. Patsy Reddy, a resident of Bluff, said she and her family suffered from flu-like symptoms and were unable to cook meals or use the toilet due to the lack of water. Caitlin Taylor mentioned that they had to travel to relatives' homes to shower and maintain personal cleanliness.

The municipality has been working to repair damaged pipelines and aged infrastructure, but the process has been slow. Former ward councillor Duncan Du Bois explained that the water supply was restored on Sunday, but the demand was so high that the Bluff Tower emptied rapidly, causing another water outage. Durban's water system is under pressure from increasing urban growth, climate variability, and the lingering effects of the 2022 floods.

The eThekwini Municipality has committed funds to rehabilitating water infrastructure and improving the reliability of the city's bulk water system. However, residents demand better communication, realistic restoration timelines, and greater visibility on progress being made.
