Germany news: Car industry hemorrhaging jobs

Germany's car industry is experiencing job losses, according to recent reports. A new business registration report from the Federal Statistical Office shows an 8.3% increase in new businesses compared to the same period last year, totaling 352,400 registrations. However, 3.0% more of these were categorized as businesses expected to employ staff than the previous year.

Conversely, the number of complete business closures in this category decreased by 3.8% to around 49,800. Despite this positive trend, German farmers are grappling with the impact of a prolonged drought and unseasonably high temperatures. The German Farmers' Association president, Joachim Ruckwied, predicts below-average grain harvests, particularly for wheat and rapeseed, as well as significant yield losses for fall crops like potatoes, vegetables, and soy.

This, combined with the financial burden of buying seed, fertilizer, and pesticides, exacerbates the economic strain on farmers. In Berlin, a fire broke out in a 21-story apartment complex, injuring several people and leaving roughly 70 in need of medical care. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but authorities are treating it as a possible balcony fire.

Meanwhile, in Austria, a 66-year-old hiker suffered serious injuries after falling from a cliff in the Austrian Alps. Additionally, a group of 245 lawmakers in Germany's lower house of parliament have signed a cross-party initiative to change the country's organ donor rules from an opt-in system to an opt-out one. This proposal aims to increase donor rates, which are currently not meeting the demand for transplants.
