El Gobierno amplía la vida de la central nuclear de Almaraz hasta 2030 por la “volatilidad de precios” originada en Oriente Próximo

The Spanish government is extending the operational life of the Almaraz nuclear power plant by two and a half years due to "price volatility" stemming from conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, which are causing global energy prices to surge. The government has authorized the prolongation of the Almaraz plant's lifespan, as recommended by the Nuclear Safety Council a month ago and requested by its owners: Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy.

According to an announcement in the Official State Bulletin on Friday, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge grants the renewal of the exploitation authorization for Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant Units I and II, and extends "the validity of the exploitation authorization for both units until June 8, 2030, taking into account that the nuclear power plant holds a valid Periodic Safety Review (PSR) until that date."

The shutdown initially scheduled to begin in November 2027 remains unchanged, as does the rest planned until 2035. The government emphasizes that the extension is "limited and restricted," aiming to protect the energy system and consumers from the volatility of international prices.
