El Gobierno amplía la vida de la central nuclear de Almaraz hasta 2030 por la “volatilidad de precios” originada en Oriente Próximo

The Spanish government has extended the lifespan of the Almaraz nuclear power plant by two and a half years due to the "volatile energy prices" caused by wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. This decision follows the recommendation of the Nuclear Safety Council a month ago, and was requested by the plant's owners: Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy.

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge granted the renewal of the exploitation authorization for Central Nuclear Almaraz, Units I and II, and extended "the validity of the exploitation authorization for both Units until June 8, 2030, taking into account that the nuclear power plant has a valid Periodic Safety Review (PSR) until that date."

The planned shutdown was initially set to begin in November 2027, but the extension will not change the other scheduled changes until 2035. The government emphasizes that the extension is "limited and confined," aiming to protect the energy system and consumers from international price volatility.
