Drone Shot Down in Latvian Airspace: Military

A military drone was brought down by fighter jets operating within Latvia's airspace on Friday, according to the nation's military. This incident unfolded amid growing worries across Europe regarding unauthorized drone usage, as the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its fifth year. The armed forces confirmed the threat had ceased in a post shared on X, stating that allied fighter jets had successfully neutralized the unmanned aerial vehicle that breached Latvia's airspace.

Finland, a neighboring country situated along Latvia's Baltic Sea, announced on X that it had enforced temporary aviation and maritime restrictions in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. The defense forces attributed this measure to a precautionary stance aimed at safeguarding civilians and preserving the operational readiness of authorities to counter potential drone incursions.

Meanwhile, the governor of Russia's northwest Leningrad region disclosed on Telegram that his country's air defenses had successfully shot down 54 Ukrainian drones. Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko reported that a fire subsequently erupted at the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga as a result of the attack.

On Monday, French fighter jets assigned to NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission successfully intercepted and shot down a drone within Latvia's borders. This marked the inaugural instance of the alliance's rapid-response force downing an unauthorized drone over Latvia. In a related development, German authorities uncovered an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig airport earlier this week, while operations at Hanover airport were disrupted following the entry of a drone into restricted airspace, according to officials speaking to AFP on Tuesday.
