Disputed Yiidana chief and son shot dead in Gushegu

A disputed Yiidana chief and his son were killed in the Northern Region's Gushegu Municipality, reigniting a four-year-old chieftaincy dispute. Three gunmen attacked the family home around midnight Thursday, killing both men, according to District Chief Executive Abdul Hafiz Adam. The conflict stems from a dispute over who has the authority to install a chief for Yiidana, involving the Paboni community and the Zantali-Lana traditional authority.

The Yaa Naa had previously ruled in favor of the Zantali-Lana, but tensions flared anew when the Zantali-Lana attempted another enskinment ceremony. The newly installed chief initially lived outside Yiidana due to security concerns, but returned to the community despite local authorities' request for a security assessment. The attack occurred after the chief's return, raising fears of further violence. Local authorities and security forces are now assessing the situation to determine the next steps.
