DeepSeek's innovative harness treats everything as a plug-in

DeepSeek, a China-based AI company, has unveiled an early version of its open source agent harness, which is generating buzz in the developer community. Harnesses have gained significance in the machine learning landscape as they offer a unified approach to managing various components. DeepSeek Harness, built on the Cordis meta-framework, embraces the concept of "Everything is a plugin."

This means that models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, filesystems, loops, orchestration, and UI are all implemented as plugins. These plugins can be mixed, matched, replaced, and extended as needed. The harness covers a wide range of concerns, including prompts, context management, tool orchestration, agent loop, state management, error handling, safety, permissions, and more.

While harnesses like Claude Code (Anthropic) and Codex (OpenAI) have gained attention, DeepSeek Harness stands out due to its innovative design and the Chinese AI labs' efforts to compete beyond model benchmarks and pricing. The harness is designed with dynamic composability in mind, allowing developers to add or remove components without disrupting the application.

DeepSeek Harness also records every interaction with the model in an append-only session log, enabling users to inspect, resume, fork, search, and replay the event stream. This feature facilitates the assessment of model reasoning and output accuracy.
