Cyclist Finlay Tarling dies at 19 after ‘serious accident’ in Portugal

British cyclist Finlay Tarling, aged 19, tragically passed away following a severe accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The younger sibling of professional cyclist Josh, who rides for Netcompany-Ineos, had previously represented Great Britain in both road and track racing. Tarling was part of the NSN Development Team when the unfortunate incident occurred on a 166.8km route between Melgaco and Fafe.

In a statement, NSN expressed their profound sorrow, describing Finlay as a cherished member of the team, as well as a son, brother, and friend to many. The team's parents, Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and all those who considered Finlay a friend, are deeply saddened by his loss. Both the race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Tarling's family, team mates, NSN Development Team, and the wider community.

The race was halted, and the podium ceremony was cancelled as a mark of respect and mourning. Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro confirmed that Tarling's death has deeply affected not only the cycling community but also the host nation.
