Conditions on USS Lincoln raise questions as new aircraft carrier heads towards Middle East

The USS George Washington is en route to the Middle East in preparation for a planned deployment to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal. This decision comes amid growing concerns over the conditions aboard the Lincoln. Crewmembers have reported shortages of basic hygiene items, reduced meal portions, and disruptions to the mail system, while others have noted mold in showers, broken toilets, and a lack of hot water.

Some crew members have even attempted to jump overboard. The Lincoln, carrying around 5,000 sailors, began its deployment on November 21, 2022, and has been supporting US operations against Iran. It has been at sea for approximately 260 days, which is longer than the typical deployment time of five to seven months for US aircraft carriers.

The Lincoln has only made one port call since its deployment - in December of last year. Pentagon officials have denied the reports of low supplies and disgruntled crewmembers, stating that every necessary provision is made for every crew and stating that some deployments are longer than others. However, the Navy Times reported that families of crewmembers have been informed that several sailors have attempted the same.

US Central Command and the Navy, on the other hand, have dismissed the reports as false, emphasizing the high crew re-enlistment rates and the Lincoln's historic deployment. Despite these denials, families and politicians continue to demand answers, with some calling for congressional visits to the ship to conduct an oversight investigation.
