Builders unearth €9m gold loot sealed in walls of Belgian property

While undertaking renovations in east Flanders, builders drilling for new sewage pipes unintentionally unearthed a hidden cache of gold estimated to be worth €9 million. The discovery sent shockwaves through the local community, with both the construction workers and the charity owning the property vying for ownership of the valuable loot.

Upon their initial inspection, the young workers suspected the objects to be common coins. However, the presence of a gold nugget prompted them to seek assistance from law enforcement. The builders, including a 18-year-old on a summer internship, promptly reported the find to the authorities, emphasizing the significance of the discovery and their reluctance to claim the treasure for themselves.

The property belongs to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a Flemish charity organization that provides welfare support to the community of Dendermonde. With a population of approximately 47,000 residents, the charity's director, Geert Hillaert, expressed astonishment at the substantial find. He hoped that the treasure would eventually be utilized to further the organization's mission and help those in need.

Local police have warned the public against attempting to locate more hidden treasure at the site, emphasizing that it has been thoroughly searched and the gold removed to a secure location. The force has even updated its Facebook profile picture to a gold coin to symbolize the significance of the find. They expressed their hope that the treasure would ultimately benefit the community and improve countless lives.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the hoard. The local prosecutor's investigation has yet to determine the identity of the owner. If no one comes forward, the treasure would be divided between the finder and the property owner, provided the stash is not linked to criminal activity. The builders and the charity now face a lengthy wait of up to 1,823 days for an owner to come forward and officially claim the treasure.

Should no one step forward, the treasure would remain undiscovered, leaving the community to ponder the fate of this extraordinary find.
