British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, dies in Tour of Portugal crash

Lisbon: British cyclist Finlay Tarling, aged 19, tragically lost his life on Friday during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal, announced race organizers and his NSN Development Team. The accident occurred on the route between Melgaco and Fafe, according to a social media post by the organizers. Portuguese broadcaster RTP reported that Tarling was involved in a head-on collision with an unrelated vehicle.

The eighth stage was halted with approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) still to go. The podium ceremony was canceled as a gesture of respect and mourning. The NSN Development Team confirmed Tarling's death and extended condolences to his parents and his 18-year-old brother Josh, who is also a cyclist riding for the Netcompany-Ineos team.

Finlay Tarling was deeply cherished within his team. In a statement on social media, the team emphasized that he was not only a son, a brother, but also a dear friend to many. His absence would be deeply felt. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also conveyed his condolences to Tarling's family and team, expressing that the news of his death leaves them deeply shaken. The NSN Development Team, co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta, mourns the loss of a promising young athlete.
