Beyond the Beach: A Cultural Stay at Okinawa Harborview Hotel

Beyond the sun-soaked beaches of Okinawa, the island offers a rich cultural experience waiting to be explored. My recent stay at Okinawa Harborview Hotel allowed me to delve into the Ryukyu heritage, vibrant food culture, and the relaxed pace of everyday life in Naha.

Upon arrival, the hotel's 50th-anniversary renovations created a fresh identity while preserving its Okinawan character. Welcoming staff and a warm atmosphere set the tone for our experience. The newly renovated Club Lounge, one of the largest in Naha, offered panoramic views and comfortable settings for a few bites and drinks.

The hotel's multi-course dinner at Teppanyaki Izumizaki, the only hotel restaurant in Okinawa registered to serve Kobe Beef, was an unforgettable culinary spectacle. The chefs' knife skills and precise technique transformed dinner into an immersive performance. A hands-on craft workshop at Shuri Ryusen, a 1970s gassho-zukuri building, allowed me to imprint natural, organic patterns onto fabric using fossilized coral cross-sections.

Despite a typhoon's approach disrupting plans for a barbecue cruise and snorkeling, a visit to the historic Shuri Castle and hands-on experience at Shuri Ryusen proved rewarding. The Castle's ongoing restoration offered a fascinating glimpse into its revival, while the workshop with real fossilized coral cross-sections left me with a unique, practical souvenir.

Our final evening at the hotel featured a night of music and cocktails at Jazz Bar Swing Okinawa. The intimate venue hosted renowned resident jazz pianist Moe Sakurai and guest artists, accompanied by an artistic ceiling-spanning pointillist dragon mural. We concluded our memorable stay with one last drink in the Club Lounge, reflecting on the depth of Okinawa's culture, history, and cuisine.
