Barberton shootout: Police officer wounded in illegal mining crackdown

A Barberton police officer sustained injuries during a clash with suspected illegal miners in the Mpumalanga region, as authorities intensified their crackdown on illicit mining operations. The shootout unfolded in Barberton on Wednesday night, August 12, 2026, when members of Operation Vala Umgodi encountered a group of armed individuals allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities.

According to police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli, the officers were conducting routine operations when they came under fire from the suspects. Upon observing a Toyota Avanza arriving at the scene, the police took cover and fired back. As a result, the officer was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Toyota Avanza, a 36-year-old man, has been apprehended and is currently under investigation. Police spokesperson Mdhluli emphasized that visibility and operations had been heightened in and around Barberton to swiftly address illegal mining activities, which are often linked to the proliferation of firearms and other criminal enterprises.

South African Police Service (SAPS) provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, vowed to pursue the illegal miners to ensure swift justice. She reiterated the commitment of the police force to bring those involved to account. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and the SAPS continues to appeal to the public for assistance in reporting any suspicious activity.
