Banyana upbeat after beating Nigeria 2-1 in a WAFCON play-offs

South Africa's women's national football team, Banyana Banyana, exhibited a strong display of sportsmanship after their 2-1 victory over Nigeria in a WAFCON play-off match held in Casablanca, Morocco. The players were thrilled to keep alive their aspirations for a spot in next year's FIFA Women’s World Cup. The former WAFCON champions showcased a remarkable performance, securing a significant win against their longtime rivals, Nigeria, and setting themselves up for the intercontinental playoffs for the upcoming tournament.

Captain Refiloe Jane and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart were confident that Banyana will qualify for the World Cup if they perform well in the qualifiers, just as they did against Nigeria. The turning point in the game came in the second half when forward Hilda Magaia set up Thembi Kgatlana for Banyana's opening goal. Kgatlana, who expressed her satisfaction with the win, acknowledged the importance of playing in high-level tournaments to boost their confidence and performance.

She shared, "We needed this to boost us. I think the more we play World Cup and big tournaments, it boosts us, and it again showed that when we are out, we always pick ourselves and get the result we need."

Despite Nigeria pulling one back late in the game, Banyana's victory proved to be a significant morale booster for the team. They celebrated the win as it kept their dream of qualifying for the World Cup alive. The team's goalkeeper Swart expressed her hope that they can replicate the performance from the game against Nigeria and continue to play with the same intensity in the intercontinental play-offs.

Captain Jane emphasized that they had faced a tough tournament and needed to give themselves a fighting chance against Nigeria. She added, "What we need to do now is go home and make sure that when we get to the intercontinental playoffs, we are ready."

The intercontinental play-offs for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Morocco will see 10 nations battling for the final three spots. Ghana and South Africa are among the contenders. The first phase of the play-offs is scheduled to take place in November and December, with the final phase scheduled for February.
