Air India A320 briefly lost key flight controls during 300-foot drop

On August 4, Air India flight AI2379 experienced an alarming incident as it descended about 300 feet during its journey from Phuket to Delhi. This sudden drop left the aircraft momentarily without crucial flight controls, resulting in injuries to 24 passengers. However, the plane managed to land safely in Delhi. According to a preliminary Airbus analysis, the elevators and ailerons, responsible for controlling the plane's pitch and roll, were unavailable for approximately four seconds.

During this time, the plane tilted upwards before the hydraulic systems regained functionality within seconds. The first officer attempted to rectify the situation by applying a full nose-down input, but the flight-control surfaces did not respond directly until the hydraulic systems were restored. Airbus has requested Air India to inspect the plane's systems and sensors, as well as provide further information regarding the incident.

Nonetheless, the root cause remains unidentified. Air India and Airbus have yet to comment on the matter. Indian authorities have deemed it a serious incident, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, with technical assistance from Airbus and France's BEA, is currently investigating. Interestingly, the flight's captain tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test, though no direct link to the altitude loss has been established as of yet.

In response to the incident, Air India initiated mandatory substance testing for all pilots, as per an internal memo.
