Actor Shakeela warns against phone addiction after Rs 3 lakh neck surgery; expert advises caution

Veteran actor C. Shakeela Begum, known as Shakeela, recently revealed that her neck surgery was the result of excessive phone use. She admitted to spending four hours playing online games, lying down, and constantly being on social media. The 52-year-old urged everyone to be cautious about phone addiction, warning that limited regulation of phone usage can lead to serious neck problems.

Surgeon Dr Jayesh Bhanushali agreed, stating that poor posture while using mobile phones, especially when used for extended periods with the head bent forward, can cause neck issues. Over time, this strain can result in stiffness, muscle fatigue, and ongoing neck pain. Dr Bhanushali emphasized that excessive phone use alone does not guarantee the need for surgery, but poor posture and prolonged inactivity can worsen existing conditions.

He also noted that symptoms like persistent neck pain, shoulder or arm pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands should not be ignored and warrant medical attention. To use phones more safely, Dr Bhanushali suggested keeping the screen at eye level, avoiding long usage while lying down, frequently changing positions, and taking regular breaks for movement during gaming or scrolling.

He also recommended children have reasonable screen time limits and engage in ample outdoor play and physical activity.
