Access Bank Ghana secures certification as a Carbon Credit Broker

Access Bank Ghana has been granted certification by the Carbon Market Office to operate as a carbon credit broker within the country. This authorization aligns with Ghana's regulatory framework for international carbon markets and the Environmental Protection Agency Act of 2025. As a result, the bank can facilitate transactions involving carbon credits, including Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes, and act as a market arranger by connecting project developers, investors, and corporations with credible carbon market opportunities.

The move positions Access Bank among a select group of institutions authorized to participate in Ghana's regulated carbon market, which is increasingly significant as demand for climate finance intermediation across Africa continues to grow. Through this certification, the bank can offer carbon market advisory services and combine these capabilities with its existing green loans, sustainability-linked lending, and transition finance solutions.

Access Bank's Managing Director, Pearl Nkrumah, emphasized that this certification confirms the bank's role as a trusted partner in Ghana's transition to a low-carbon economy. The bank's Head of Public Sector and Sustainability, Priscilla Ashiam, highlighted the importance of this recognition for the public sector, where decarbonization commitments increasingly require access to credible carbon markets.

This certification builds on Access Bank Group's established record of mobilizing climate capital across Africa, as demonstrated by the bank's achievement in 2019 of becoming the first African corporate issuer to receive Climate Bonds Initiative certification for a green bond, raising funds to finance low-carbon projects across various sectors in Nigeria.
