Xavi takes charge of Netherlands, ends 48-year wait for foreign coach

Paris, August 13 - Xavi Hernandez has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, marking the first time a foreign coach will lead the Oranje since 1974. The Barcelona legend, who won the 2010 World Cup with Spain as a player, will bring his extensive playing experience and coaching expertise to the Dutch team.

Xavi has signed a four-year contract, ensuring he will lead the team through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup campaigns. Speaking about his connection to Dutch football, Xavi stated, "As someone who received his training at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football."

He added, "Other great coaches, especially Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, also played an important role in shaping me as a player and coach." Koeman stepped down after the Netherlands' defeat in the last-32 phase against Morocco, with Arne Slot initially considered but ultimately choosing to remain in club football.

Xavi's first match in charge will be a Nations League match against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on September 24. The Netherlands, known for their possession-based, attacking style of play, are still striving to overcome their reputation as 'almost men' in international football. Despite losing three World Cup finals, they have only one major title, a Euro 1988 victory.

Xavi's predecessor, Ernst Happel, led the team to the 1978 World Cup final, where they lost to Argentina. With a strong foundation and a clear vision, Xavi aims to build upon the team's potential and deliver attacking, creative, and passionate football that reflects the Dutch ethos.
