WNBA Team Presidents Hold Meeting Over Transgender Eligibility

The WNBA is currently evaluating its policy on transgender athletes competing in women's sports following comments made by star Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham had expressed negative feelings about transgender athletes, but later clarified that she intended to share love while also being honest and protecting young girls in sports.

The league currently has no specific rules for transgender athlete eligibility, as it only requires players to be women. However, the WNBA is forming a task force of team presidents and general managers to examine its eligibility rules for transgender athletes after Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White both declared for the 2027 WNBA draft.

The league emphasized that they approach such conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with their values, strongly denouncing any attempts to use these issues to demean or marginalize others. The topic has divided the league's fan base, with protests and counter-protests occurring at a Fever-Seattle Storm game.
