Wife dies by suicide a month after husband’s death in Moshi garbage depot mishap

Sonali Gaikwad, a 23-year-old resident of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar in Moshi, took her own life at her residence in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Wednesday, one month after her husband's death. Nagesh Gaikwad, 26, died in the collapse of the waste-to-energy plant at the Moshi garbage depot on July 8. Nine people lost their lives in the incident.

Police rushed to Sonali's residence around 7 pm after receiving information about her suicide. Her body was taken to YCM Hospital for postmortem, and no suicide note was found. Assistant Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Yadav registered an accidental death report at the Bhosari MIDC police station and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Sonali had been in shock following her husband's sudden demise in the Moshi tragedy. Police speculate that her death may be linked to her grief over losing her husband, but a suicide note is yet to be uncovered. Nagesh, originally from Georai taluka in Beed district, moved to Pimpri-Chinchwad with his family three years ago and worked at the Moshi garbage depot for the same duration.

The couple had two daughters, aged 4 and 2. In a preliminary probe, it was discovered that Sonali's daughters were present in another room when she took her own life. Her in-laws were away at the time, and her relatives have alleged that they harassed her following Nagesh's death. Police are verifying these allegations and interviewing Sonali's relatives to ascertain the circumstances behind her death.
