Who the Heck is the Amazing Venom, and Why Is He Getting His Own Marvel Series?

Marvel is currently in the middle of a crossover event called Queen in Black, during which the world is caught up in a destructive conflict between Hela, the Asgardian death goddess, and Knull, the symbiote god. This momentous occasion will undoubtedly change the landscape of the Spider-Man franchise, leading to the launch of a new monthly Venom series.

This series will feature Eddie Brock reuniting with his beloved symbiote, but there is also an exciting new spinoff miniseries called The Amazing Venom. To shed light on this lesser-known character, we interviewed writer Jordan Morris.

In the interview, Morris explained that The Amazing Venom takes a cult-favorite Spider-Man villain, Fred Myers, aka Boomerang, and elevates him to new, ridiculous heights. Morris described Fred as a villain with simple ambitions, simply wanting to throw boomerangs at people and steal money. He joked that if he had access to exploding boomerangs and jet boots, he would probably be a hero instead. This character has had a tumultuous history, including being killed by a vampire and coming back to life, making him a familiar face to Avengers and X-Men.

The series aims to revamp Fred Myers, giving him a significant power upgrade. He must decide whether to return to his old life or try to be something bigger, better, and more ambitious. Morris mentioned that Fred is torn between returning to the common street crime he's comfortable with and embracing the power he now possesses. This decision comes with a mix of humor and relatability, as Fred's symbiote, Passenger, keeps the duo on an adventurous path, representing the different impulses in our own brains that pull us in various directions.

Morris also noted that fans of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, a series known for its irreverent humor and focus on D-List villains, will likely enjoy The Amazing Venom. The interview closed with Morris expressing his admiration for the work of Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber, the creators of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, and expressing his hope that The Amazing Venom will have its own unique tone and identity while still paying homage to the beloved fan-favorite.
