Who is Gautam Rangarajan? Indian-origin ex-BBC strategist gets key role under UK PM Burnham

Former BBC strategist and media executive Gautam Rangarajan, of Indian origin, has been appointed as an Expert Adviser on Structure and Process by newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The 10 Downing Street role was announced in a press release on Tuesday.

Rangarajan, who started his BBC career in 1993, has held senior strategy positions at the broadcaster and served as its Director of Strategy and Group Director of Strategy and Performance. He brings over 20 years of experience in media, creative industries, and public service broadcasting.

His LinkedIn profile highlights his expertise in strategy development in fast-changing markets, driving organizational growth, and negotiating high-stakes policy and financial agreements. Rangarajan also emphasizes his proficiency in connecting with multiple stakeholders, including government bodies and regulators, and his innovative approach to staying ahead of global media trends.

Burnham, who became the Labour Party leader and UK Prime Minister in July, envisions a distinctly different approach to governance. He has initiated projects such as the creation of No. 10 North in Manchester, embodying his devolution agenda, and realigned government departments to form the new Department for Business, Innovation, Science, and Trade.
