Under Okpebholo, Edo debt rises, now Nigeria’s sixth most indebted state

Humanitarian funding for Nigeria surged by $17.9 million over a two-month period, according to the latest data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This increase propelled Nigeria to the top of the eight crisis-affected countries in West and Central Africa, with the highest-funded status.

As of August 10, 2026, Nigeria had received a total of $265.2 million in humanitarian funding. Of this amount, $257.9 million was allocated through Nigeria's Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), while $7.3 million came from external sources. Compared to June 22, 2026, when Nigeria received $247.3 million, the funding has risen by $17.9 million, or approximately 7.2 percent.

The HNRP funding alone increased from $232.8 million to $257.9 million, reflecting a 10.8 percent rise. This funding surge has brought Nigeria's HNRP coverage rate to 50 percent of its $516.4 million 2026 requirement, up from 47 percent in the previous report. Nigeria's coverage rate now surpasses that of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which stands at 47 percent.

The DRC had previously raised $1.01 billion against a requirement of $2.13 billion. Other countries in the region, such as the Central African Republic (42 percent), Chad (35 percent), Burkina Faso (28 percent), Cameroon (26 percent), Mali (20 percent), and Niger (16 percent), lag behind in terms of coverage.
