Uncharted territories: Anthony Loke on alliances, unity constraints and search for lasting model

Malaysia continues to search for a permanent model of governance eight years after its political order collapsed, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who is also the secretary-general of the DAP. Since 2018, the political landscape has undergone multiple permutations and collaborations as parties work out arrangements to strengthen their positions.

Loke explained that political parties and politicians continue to make calculations based on their chances of winning elections and remaining in power, and this trend is expected to persist.

As a DAP secretary-general and Cabinet minister in the Unity Government, Loke navigates the competing demands of his roles, balancing the party's positions with the constraints of a unity government. While DAP has not abandoned its positions, it must operate within the collective responsibility of the Cabinet. Loke stated that he cannot publicly criticize Cabinet colleagues, coalition parties, or government policies while serving in the administration, but the party can still take critical positions on certain government policies or actions.

The shifting political landscape has also led to changes in some political alliances, as seen in the state elections where the two federal coalition partners contested elections separately in Johor and Negeri Sembilan. Loke acknowledged that such developments could be disappointing, but the direction of Malaysian politics ultimately depends on the voters' choices.
