Uncharted territories: Anthony Loke on alliances, unity constraints and search for lasting model

Malaysia continues its quest for a permanent model of governance, eight years after the collapse of its long-standing political order, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The country has witnessed numerous permutations and collaborations since 2018, with political actors working out arrangements they believe would enhance their positions. Loke, who serves as DAP secretary-general and is a Cabinet minister in the unity government, stated that Malaysia is still in uncharted territories.

Political parties and politicians remain focused on maximizing their political function, calculating their chances of winning elections and retaining power. Since 2018, the political landscape has evolved, and Loke expects it to continue evolving. The shifting political landscape has also affected Loke's dual role as DAP secretary-general and Cabinet minister, where he must balance the demands of his roles.

While DAP has not abandoned its positions, it must operate within the constraints of a unity government, coordinating efforts and adhering to collective responsibility. Loke explained that he cannot publicly criticize Cabinet colleagues, coalition parties, or government policies while serving in the administration. However, DAP can still express critical positions on government policies, creating a delicate balance for the party.

Major decisions are brought before DAP's Central Executive Committee for a common opinion and decision. Although some political developments may be disappointing, Loke believes that parties will continue making decisions based on their electoral interests as Malaysia adapts to its post-2018 political reality. The final choice, he said, lies with the voters.
