Ukraine receives 261 bodies Russia claims belong to Ukrainian soldiers

On August 13, Ukraine received the remains of 261 individuals through a new repatriation operation, according to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War. Russian authorities assert these bodies may be those of Ukrainian soldiers. Forensic experts and investigators from various Ukrainian agencies, including the SBU Security Service and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will work to identify the repatriated remains.

This repatriation effort involved multiple Ukrainian security and defense agencies, as well as representatives from the Joint Center under Ukraine’s SBU Security Service, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons Under Special Circumstances. The operation aimed to return human remains to their families and provide closure during the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has previously received repatriated bodies in significant numbers. On June 18, 522 bodies were returned, with Russian authorities claiming they could belong to Ukrainian citizens, including soldiers. On May 16, 528 bodies were repatriated, with similar concerns from Russian authorities. On April 9, Ukraine received the remains of 1,000 individuals, again with Russian authorities suggesting the remains may be of Ukrainian soldiers.

Additionally, on February 26, Ukraine received 1,000 bodies as part of an exchange of fallen soldiers.
