Ukraine needs 5% of U.S. interceptor stocks to survive winter – Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a CNN interview on August 13 that his nation requires at least 5% of the U.S. interceptor missile stockpile to endure the winter, with 10% sufficient to thwart all Russian ballistic missile assaults. Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in Russian ballistic attacks, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of their impact due to Ukraine's depleted stocks of Patriot interceptors.

Zelenskyy emphasized that a tenth of the current U.S. stockpile would suffice to neutralize all Russian ballistic missile strikes, while a fifth would be adequate to sustain Ukraine through the winter. Ukraine currently possesses only two and a half times the number of interceptor missiles it had last year, while Russia has doubled its monthly ballistic missile launches.

The president expressed his daily efforts to secure additional missiles, engaging in talks with allies to negotiate resource exchanges and explore alternative acquisition methods. However, the shortage is attributed to a global deficit, stemming from the intensive consumption of interceptors by the U.S. and its allies in their war with Iran.

Zelenskyy remains uncertain about the practical implementation of President Donald Trump's promise to permit Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot interceptors, despite Trump's initial commitment at the NATO Ankara summit. The manufacturers of the Patriot missile systems have visited Kyiv to discuss this possibility, but no concrete outcomes have been achieved.

Zelenskyy appealed directly to the White House via phone calls and messages, as well as through his allies, to bolster U.S. assistance in Patriot interceptors. Despite Trump's rejection of his request for additional missiles during a meeting in August, Zelenskyy continued to negotiate with European partners and Scandinavian countries for further interceptor missile deliveries.
