UK water bills to rise as regulator green lights £3.4bil in extra spending

The UK's water regulator, Ofwat, has provisionally approved £3.4 billion in additional spending for five British water companies to improve infrastructure and environmental measures. This funding aims to tackle "forever chemicals," enhance drinking water quality, support housebuilding and data centre development. The move comes amid intense scrutiny of the water industry, which has faced environmental breaches, ballooning debt, high dividend payouts, and rising customer bills.

Ofwat's statement highlighted the need to address the industry's underinvestment and poor regulation, acknowledging the frustration of households coping with rising water bills. Environment Secretary Angela Eagle expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the need for change.

Five out of the 13 water companies receiving approvals will be able to increase customer bills between 2027 and 2030. Southern Water, serving over 4 million consumers, will see the largest increase, with bills rising by £43 in 2027-28 and £37 in 2029-2030. Thames Water, the UK's largest utility and one struggling to avoid collapse, will be allowed to raise bills by £3 for 2027-28 and £5 for 2029-2030.

Ofwat executive director for delivery Helen Campbell stated that performance will be closely monitored to ensure companies deliver on improvements for customers and the environment. If they fail to meet expectations, the additional funding can be clawed back. The regulator will make its final decision on the funding allocation in December.
