SNAPSHOT | Anwar back home after surgery; works minister to retire from Parliament in next election

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim successfully underwent laparoscopic surgery on Monday to address a para-umbilical hernia, according to his medical team. Currently, he is receiving physiotherapy and closely monitored by a team of medical experts to ensure a smooth recovery process. Sri Ranga Abdullah Ramaiah, the head of Anwar's medical team, stated this in a statement.

Earlier on Monday, Anwar's aide revealed that the premier was undergoing medical examinations and was expected to be under observation for two days. Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, the Press Secretary, expressed hope that Anwar would maintain good health to resume his duties soon.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his well wishes to Anwar, praying for his swift and smooth recovery. He posted a message on social media, wishing his Malaysian counterpart a speedy recovery during his medical procedures and also extending his prayers for good health and well-being to the people of Pakistan.

Anwar, who turned 79 on Monday, is serving as the Prime Minister since 2022. He has a history of recurring shoulder and back problems. Earlier this year, he was hospitalized in 2018 for shoulder and back pain, and last November, he cancelled a trip to Pahang state due to back pain. In January, he received a clean bill of health after a routine medical examination, as per a hospital statement.
