SBU Busts 14-Member Russian Spy Ring Targeting Ukraine’s F-16, Mirage 2000 Bases

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has dismantled a Russian intelligence network comprising 14 members who were targeting Ukrainian airfields hosting Western fighter jets, including F-16 and Mirage 2000, according to an announcement on Thursday. The SBU claims the group was working on behalf of Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, collecting data intended to aid Moscow in planning potential strikes on Ukrainian air bases.

According to the SBU, the GRU initially recruited a Lviv resident who operated an aviation-focused Telegram channel. The agent was discovered after posting pictures of Ukrainian military aircraft in pro-Kremlin online groups. Subsequently, the agent recruited 13 followers, unbeknownst to them that they were aiding Russian intelligence.

The suspects resided throughout Ukraine, close to military aviation sites, and possessed high-quality cameras. They were ordered to photograph airfields, fighter jets, crews, and maintenance staff, as well as monitor the aircraft's takeoff and landing schedules. The suspects utilized professional cameras while concealing themselves in abandoned structures or open areas near air bases.

The photographs were transferred to an online storage service and subsequently forwarded to a Russian handler, whose identity has been confirmed by the SBU. The Lviv-based agent is also accused of providing Russia with schedules for military helicopter takeoffs and landings. The information allegedly originated from a Ukrainian Armed Forces aviation squadron commander who willingly disclosed this data to the agent.

During searches, investigators uncovered smartphones, digital cameras, and pictures of Ukrainian military aviation facilities, allegedly capturing the suspects' activities. The SBU further blocked four Telegram channels and ten groups allegedly utilized for disseminating photographs and other information regarding Ukrainian aviation units.

The Lviv agent, his accomplice, and the Ukrainian serviceman have been charged with crimes against Ukraine's national security. The investigation remains active as authorities strive to identify and prosecute the remaining participants.
