SANBI seeks R741 million for infrastructure upgrades at Kirstenbosch Gardens and Pilanesberg National Park

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires R741 million in funding to upgrade infrastructure at Kirstenbosch Gardens and Pilanesberg National Park, according to Nqabisa Gantsho, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. Gantsho explained that these crucial conservation sites are facing severe infrastructure challenges, including water systems, security, electricity, road, and visitor amenity maintenance.

These facilities, established a century ago, require urgent restoration to meet modern standards for safety, accessibility, and sustainability. The funding gap between what is available and what is needed is projected to reach R839 million by 2029/2030, despite recent allocations, such as R180 million in 2024/2025. Gantsho highlighted that staffing shortages, particularly in horticultural and technical roles, further exacerbate the operational challenges.

While SANBI has made progress with projects like the Boomslang walkway and facility upgrades, these achievements are overshadowed by the looming risk of infrastructure deterioration unless sustained funding is secured. Gantsho stressed the importance of balancing commercial activities with conservation and educational mandates, emphasizing that current budget limitations make it difficult to invest in green energy, water conservation, and other essential upgrades.
