Reed Hastings says AI may push CEOs to cut their workforce in half — or expand their reach

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, believes artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly impact CEOs, potentially forcing them to either halve their workforce or expand their businesses. During an interview on Semafor's "The CEO Signal" podcast, Hastings expressed optimism about AI's potential for companies. He stated that in five years, frontier models will be 32 times better than today, and in 10 years, they could be a thousand times better, if the current pace of improvement continues.

Hastings sees this as an opportunity for companies to gain a competitive edge, likening it to doubling their workforce. He predicts that companies will use AI to attack each other, leading to creative destruction. Hastings also dismissed concerns that only large companies will benefit from AI, suggesting that smaller firms, with more agility, could be the most innovative and aggressive users of AI.

He noted that it is more an attitudinal issue than the size of the firm, depending on the applicability of AI to their businesses. Hastings uses AI daily, leveraging it to improve his knowledge and the software at Powder Mountain, his Utah ski resort project.
