Rare seahorse sighting signals healthy habitat

A rare seahorse, locally called Buzaizi, was recently spotted in the Khor Al Adaid Nature Reserve, signaling a positive outlook for the health and biodiversity of Qatar’s vital marine ecosystem. The Marine Protection Department, under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), documented the encounter during a recent field survey at Sealine Beach.

The seahorse was discovered among seagrass beds, which are essential habitats for these unique marine creatures. The investigation revealed that the area was in excellent environmental condition, providing the ideal environment for the seahorse to thrive. Divers conducting the survey also found no signs of any violations or environmental damage within the surveyed region.

The seahorse is considered a rare marine fish of significant ecological importance, serving as a valuable indicator of the overall health of the marine ecosystem. Its presence within the reserve highlights the critical role that natural habitats, especially seagrass meadows, play in supporting marine life and preserving biodiversity.

The MoECC emphasized the necessity to protect these sensitive habitats, address practices that could harm marine life, and reinforce monitoring and conservation measures to ensure the long-term survival of Qatar’s marine species and safeguard the nation’s rich biodiversity.
