PHOTOS: Atiku meets UK High Commissioner

On Thursday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, and senior British diplomatic officials for discussions on current events in Nigeria. Atiku's spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, confirmed the meeting via a post on X, stating that Montgomery, the Head of Political Section, Lucy Green, and Second Secretary Political, Thomas Simpson, were among the attendees.

The discussions centered on matters pertaining to Nigeria, although specifics were not disclosed. Photos and video footage from the event show Atiku, wearing traditional attire, greeting and shaking hands with the visiting diplomats in a formal setting with Nigerian flags present.

This meeting follows the British High Commission's interactions with Nigerian political leaders and officials in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. In April 2026, the UK High Commission shared a statement via X, revealing that Montgomery and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever had met with political leaders and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The UK Commission expressed its intention to collaborate with all political parties to ensure "inclusive and credible elections." These meetings included visits to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, the 2023 presidential candidates Atiku and Peter Obi, and the INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan.

The purpose of these visits was to discuss developments in Nigeria's political and democratic processes.
