Parts of Greater Accra to experience power cuts as GRIDCo repairs damaged transmission line

Certain regions within the Greater Accra area will momentarily face disruptions in their electricity supply over the weekend. This is due to restoration and scheduled upkeep work being conducted on the affected Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line. Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, disclosed that the planned maintenance would require a few hours and was essential for conducting the restoration work safely.

The transmission line was compromised near Ashaiman Middle East following a fuel tanker explosion. The incident occurred when a fuel tanker, which was undergoing welding works, came into contact with the transmission line, causing a significant portion of the tanker to be propelled over 300 meters into a transmission tower. This collision damaged the structural integrity of the tower.

Dr Jinapor urged residents who might be affected by the temporary power interruptions to exercise patience and understanding. He emphasized that these shutdowns were necessary to uphold the safety and reliability of the transmission system. "These interruptions will be necessary to facilitate the works and ensure the safety and reliability of the transmission system," he explained.

Additionally, Dr Jinapor reiterated the importance of the public maintaining a safe distance from protected transmission corridors. He warned that unauthorized activities and encroachments could pose serious threats to lives and damage critical infrastructure. "We must protect these critical transmission corridors to safeguard lives, property and the reliability of Ghana’s power supply," he stressed.
