Pakistan, Norway reaffirm resolve to strengthen bilateral ties, expand engagement in defence and security

Pakistan and Norway have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in defence and security during a visit by Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to Pakistan. The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, regional security, and bilateral relations, with Eide praising Pakistan's role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Eide also highlighted Pakistan's professional role in addressing common security challenges and commended the Pakistan Armed Forces for their efforts. The Norwegian minister expressed Norway's strong support for Pakistan's mediation role in the US-Iran conflict, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law.

The visiting minister discussed regional issues such as the Kashmir issue and Afghanistan during his visit. He also mentioned a recently signed defense pact between Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, noting that Norway has close relations with all three countries.

During his address, Eide emphasized the importance of open sea lanes and the free passage of maritime traffic. He stressed that this issue, along with combating nature loss and climate change, promoting global health, and fighting poverty, were among the key topics of discussion during his visit.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed Eide's sentiments, stating that both countries agreed to enhance bilateral ties and cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, education, defense, climate change, information technology, and maritime affairs. Dar also expressed Pakistan's willingness to host the next round of bilateral political consultations later in the year.
