Pakistan Names Its First Ever Rover for the Moon

Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO, has officially named the country's inaugural lunar rover "Jinnah-1" following a nationwide competition that garnered over 4,000 proposals from across the nation. The name was chosen by a jury after a thorough review of the submissions. Scheduled to launch to the Moon's south pole in 2029 aboard China's Chang' E-8 mission, the rover will carry state-of-the-art scientific instruments to investigate lunar plasma and radiation, map the lunar surface's geological features, and execute experiments crucial for future lunar exploration and the establishment of a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

The name "Jinnah-1" honors Pakistan's founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and embodies his vision of a forward-looking Pakistan. The public response to the competition highlighted a strong national interest and enthusiasm for Pakistan's burgeoning space program. Out of seven participants who proposed the name "Jinnah-1," 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar was selected as the winner through a lucky draw during a special ceremony.

SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan commended the public's engagement in the competition, emphasizing the historical and national significance of naming the first lunar rover after Quaid-e-Azam. He pointed out that the rover's name symbolizes resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of progress, underscoring Pakistan's readiness to uphold its legacy of leadership and hard work as it ventures into new frontiers, particularly in space exploration.
